January Birthstone: Garnet

January’s birthstone is one of the most diverse gemstone groups. The deep, red varieties have been compared to pomegranate fruit and some believe it’s name was derived from it, although it was actually derived from the Latin word “granum” meaning grain. While traditionally Garnets are deep red in color, they can also be found in shades of green, yellow, orange and other earth-colored tones. And not only do they have many colors, they also have many names. You might find them called Pyrope, Rhodolite and Almandite to name a few. The Garnet is known as the stone of health and commitment and is thought by some to aid in issues with arthritis, the pancreas and varicose veins.
