11 Feb Amethyst – February’s Birthstone

February is here and the beautiful birthstone for this month is the amethyst!  This purple quartz is found all over the globe (in case you didn’t know, quartz is the second most abundant material found in the Earth’s crust) and it’s red & violet hues have been enjoyed and worn for centuries.

Color and Hardness

Amethysts get their lovely colors from a combination of different natural causes: irradiation, iron impurities and the presence of trace elements are what make the amethyst the deep purple that it is. It is also quite hardy (a 7 on the Mohs scale, like other less colorful forms of quartz), making it a beautiful and sensible choice for necklaces, rings and earrings that can be worn daily.

Cut and Hue

Purple is the most common color associated with the amethyst, although it can be found in other varieties.  From light pinkish to a very deep purple, this gem can also have multiple color variations in the same stone.  One thing that can affect the finish on this particular stone is how it is cut.  Like many stones, the quality of the cut can have a significant impact on the final product.

Origin

Amethysts are found everywhere on Earth, from Argentina to Zambia, and their place in the long lore of gemstones and their perceived mystical qualities by ancient peoples is secure.  Its name comes from the ancient Greek word “methustos”, which means “intoxicated”.  The ancients wore amethysts to ward off the intoxicating influences of Bacchus — the Greek god of agriculture, fertility……and wine.
