The Precious And Pragmatic Pearl

The only gemstone to be created by living organisms, pearls have long been appreciated for their versatility and classic simplicity.

The history of this birthstone is one full of wonder, as different cultures theorized a variety of mythical origins from whence the pearl came. For example, Chinese lore weaves a tail that pearls were borne from the brains of dragons, whereas Middle Eastern mythology claims that pearls were teardrops fallen from the heavens above.

And while the reality of the pearl is much more earthly than divine, that is not to say that they are not still delicate.

“Pearls are very soft, ranging between 2.5 and 4.5 on the Mohs scale,” according to the American Gem Society (AGS). “They are sensitive to extreme heat and acidity. In fact, calcium carbonate is so susceptible to acid that authentic pearls will dissolve in vinegar.”

In Awe Of Alexandrite

First discovered in the Russian Ural Mountains, Alexandrite was named for the heir apparent of the Russian throne at the time: Alexander II.

“Alexandrite caught the country’s attention because its red and green colors mirrored the national military colors of imperial Russia,” as explained by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). “Most prized are those Alexandrite birthstones that show a vivid green to bluish-green in daylight or fluorescent light, and an intense red to purplish-red in incandescent light.”

Specifically, Alexandrite is one of the rarest varieties of the mineral called chrysoberyl, the likes of which is even rarer than diamonds when occurring naturally.

Thankfully, this particular birthstone may last quite a while when treated well, as it has earned an 8.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

Mystified By Moonstone

“Moonstone is a mystical gem known for its opalescent shimmer,” according to the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA). “For centuries, this gem has been regarded as a symbol of growth and fertility, making it an elegant and affordable addition to any collection.”

Another gemstone that is long-lauded as both beautiful and mystical in nature, Hindu lore identifies the moonstone as the product of compressed moonbeams. Similarly, Roman legend prizes it as a stone of frozen moonbeams, also regarding it as a talisman of good fortune.

Today, the moonstone is often referred to as “the lover’s stone” and is frequently used for meditative purposes.

Finally, falling between the two aforementioned birthstones in terms of hardness, Moonstone is ranked at about a 6 or 6.5 on the Mohs scale.
