February Birthstone: Amethyst

This beautiful gemstone is a variety of quartz. Amethysts are always purple in color, but you will find them in a variety of shades. Amethysts are widely available and make wonderful, inexpensive gifts. It is said to be symbolic of protection and the ability to overcome difficulties. Many believe it has the power to strengthen the bond between two people.

The name Amethyst is derived from the Greek language which means “not drunken.” The Greeks believed that this stone protected the wearer from intoxication. Amethysts were also used during medieval times. Soldiers would wear them into battle for protection because they believed that the stone had the ability to heal and keep them cool-headed.
