20 Mar How to Clean your Jewelry Using Everyday Household Items – DIY Tips
Hemming Jewelers is proud of all the pieces we make and sell, and we want them to last and look beautiful as much as you do! Here are some tarnish and gunk removal hacks you can use at home to keep your favorite pieces looking good as new for years to come! There’s no need for expensive jewelry cleaners, when most of these highly effective items are just as effective and probably already in your house.
Five household items that work miracles for cleaning your jewelry at home:
Club Soda
You may be surprised to read that club soda is great for cleaning your diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, and rubies, however this trick works impressively well. All you need to do is grab a glass, fill it up and let your gems soak overnight. You will see those little bubbles eat away at the grime instantly – and be left with sparkling clean jewelry by morning.
Alka-Seltzer or denture tablets
Don’t want to wait overnight to get your jewelry to shine? These items work within a matter of minutes! With anything that plops and fizzes, there’s a good bet it will eat away build up and grime in a flash. The same application techniques apply here as above: Simply fill a glass with water, drop in the tablets, then add your diamond rings or earrings, and let the magic work!
Light Beer
If you’re not a club soda drinker, maybe you have some Corona or Bud Light in the fridge? This liquid is great for shining up your plain, solid GOLD (minus any precious gemstones). While you’re enjoying an icy cold brew, pour a little bit on a clean, soft cloth and rub it gently over the item. Then, use a clean, second cloth to wipe it dry. Just be sure never to use dark ale, the results will not be desirable.
Vodka
We’re trying to cover all of our bases here, so if you’re not a club soda drinker, nor a light beer connoisseur – maybe vodka is your thing? This works on all glass or jewelry with crystalline gemstones. So, whether you’re having a nightcap, or having drinks with friends, don’t hesitate to dip your diamond ring into your vodka on the rocks, or use a napkin and a splash of vodka to clean your glasses. People might look at you funny, until they see that it works!
Toothpaste
If all else fails, we know you’ve got some toothpaste at home – and this can clean diamonds just like it polishes your teeth. Simply apply some paste onto a clean toothbrush, and do your thing. Remove the residue with a clean, damp cloth.
At Hemming Jewelers, we care about your jewelry as much as you do, so if you ever need any professional cleaning, jewelry care advice, or want to have your pieces inspected – come in and see us!
